Morning clicks: Rand Paul’s anti-slavery stand, the Arizona divide

Happy hump day! Things must be getting rough over in TJMS-land. This is the first time in the umpteen years I’ve known of him that Tom Joyner has been running TV spots pitching for advertising on behalf of Radio One-partially owned Reach Media. I just saw the commercial again, and it’s running a-lot. Hm …

The Libertarians at Reason Magazine have come up with probably the most novel defense of Rand Paul’s stance on the CRA: it’s the anti-slavery position.

Meanwhile, apparently there’s no defending plagiarist extraordinaire Vaughn Ward. He lost his primary bid yesterday, Sarah Palin’s support notwithstanding, after his campaign imploded under the weight of his cribbing. So who else was with Ward? Why, the chicken lady, Sue Lowden, that’s who!

NBC News and Telemundo have a new poll in the field that shows a growing white-Latino divide on immigration. Not good news for Republican prospects in the Western U.S., especially when Republicans’ entire election pitch this year consists of “we hate Obama,” and let’s go back to a 1980 that never was.

Rep. Charles Djou, the temporary Congressman from President Obama’s home district in Hawaii, is on MSNBC right now fumbling around about the Arizona immigration law. I honestly can’t tell you where he stands on it after hearing him talk for 2 minutes. Chuck Todd asked him again if he would support such a law for Hawaii, he said “if the federal government failed in its responsibility and it got that bad” in his state, “of course” he would support such a law. Yeah, he’s toast in November.

The president, meanwhile, is sending 1,200 National Guard troops to the Arizona-Mexico border, not that that’s going to be enough for John McCain.

Maybe he should send some troops to the Gulf of Mexico, too …

And speaking of the gusher, with the politics getting really nasty here in Florida, Gov. Crist says the $25 million from BP to support tourism advertising is in the bank (better late than never,) and Florida’s Congressional delegation has written to Washington demanding a ban on further offshore drilling near our coasts. The only Republican to sign on? Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who has a history of bucking her party on some “Democratic” issues. Meanwhile, Bill Nelson calls out the Rs for putting politics ahead of their own state’s interests.

Staying with Florida for a moment, guess who’s suing now, over an attempt to draw fair districts in Florida? The Incumbents!

At least 44 people have been killed in gun battles between Jamaican police and supporters of a Kingston drug lord wanted for extradition to the U.S. This thing is getting ugly.
